How to Obtain a Work Permit in Canada? A Brief Guide

25 May 2023

The most common reason for going to developed countries like Canada for the people of poor countries like the Gambia is to find better employment opportunities to earn and support their families financially, as these expatriates send money online from Canada

Canada is one of the most preferred expatriate destinations due to its robust economy and multiple job opportunities in different sectors for skilled, unskilled, not-so-skilled, and adequately skilled people hailing from many developing countries like the Gambia.

A brief background

Joblessness and poverty are the two issues on which almost all developing countries converge. On the other hand, abundant jobs and lower poverty levels are the two economic strengths all developed countries largely share.

Political upheavals and uncertainty coupled with hostile and elite-centric economic policies in the Gambia render many people jobless, pushing them deeper into poverty.

It is the primary reason that the people of the Gambia travel to Canada to obtain a work permit to earn a living.

This blog will shed light on the process of obtaining a work permit in Canada.

Canadian economy

  • With a GDP of $2.221 trillion, Canada is the world’s 8th largest economy.
  • It is the world’s 15th largest economy with a Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) of $2.237 trillion.
  • Its GDP per capita income is $57,406, which is the 14th highest in the world.
  • Its PPP per capita income is $57,812, which is the 22nd highest in the world.
  • The unemployment rate is around 5.3% till as late as March 2022 and is dropping fast, allowing more people to get employed.

These figures show how robust and expansive the Canadian economy is. It welcomes job-seeking expatriates from developing countries, including the Gambia, who send money to the Gambia online.

Obtaining a work permit in Canada – inside out!

Working in Canada offers several advantages, including earning a higher income, being a part of the international workforce, and getting Canadian work experience.

Many people, therefore, come to Canada for work after they obtain a Canadian work permit whose details are as under.

Do you need a work permit in Canada?

Yes, if you are not a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen. There are some professions you do not require, like actors, coaches or athletes, business visitors, etc.

Students can also obtain one if their study visa so demands, should they need a job.

Types of work permits

There are two main types of work permits for expatriates who want to work in Canada.

Open work permits

An open work permit allows you to serve an eligible Canadian employer for a predetermined time. You can work in any organisation or even switch jobs on an open work permit.

Open work permits, however, are issued in certain circumstances, such as:

  • Being an international student who has just graduated and is eligible for a post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
  • If you have applied for permanent residence or a dependent family member of someone applying for the same.
  • If you are the spouse of a foreign worker or an international student in Canada.
  • An international student who is unable to bear study costs.
  • In case you are a protected person or have sought refuge.
  • In case you happen to possess a temporary resident permit.

Organisation-specific work permits

You can only work for a specific organisation or employer of this type. It is known as a closed work permit. You essentially need a job offer from your employer in Canada clearly stating the employer’s name, job location, terms and conditions, etc.

In a closed work permit, you cannot switch jobs.

Eligibility conditions to obtain a work permit

  • You must prove that you will leave Canada once your work permit expires.
  • Prove your financial health to support your and your family’s stay in Canada.
  • Prove that you do not have a criminal record and that you will strictly obey Canadian law.
  • Have sound health and undergo a pre-arrival medical test, if needed.
  • Prove that you will not work for an ineligible employer or the ones indulging in immoral and immodest activities like erotic dance or erotic messages, etc.
  • You must provide all the necessary documents required to enter Canada.
  • You also need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or visit visa, but that depends on which country you belong to.
  • You will need a job offer to apply for an employer-specific work permit, but you do not require one for an open work permit.

Applying for the work permit

  • Provide all the essential documents.
  • Fill out the permit form and application.
  • Pay the fee normally $340 CAD, including the biometrics fee, Open Work Permit Holder fee, etc.
  • Submit the application after meeting all requirements and thoroughly checking them.
  • Wait for the application to process.

As soon as your application is approved, you will be called for an interview, qualifying for which you will be cleared to travel to Canada.
